I Bring the Fire: Part I Wolves

I Bring the Fire: Part I Wolves - C. Gockel I have red hair. Contrary to popular belief, I am not Irish. There's one day a year I pretend to be Irish but only because it generally nets me free beer. I am very Scandinavian (There's a little German thrown in for good measure. You can't have a name like Gretchen and not be a little German). Unlike my Viking ancestors ( I don't know if any of my ancestors were actually Vikings but I feel like there's a good chance someone was), I know surprising little about Norse mythology. I prefer togas for some reason. What I do know of Norse mythology comes mainly from Marvel movies. If you are just like me, forget everything Marvel taught you.

I Bring the Fire tells the tale of Loki. This Loki is a different Loki. A Loki who has found his way to Midgard in search of his sons and ex-wife. Here Loki meets Amy, a well-endowed veterinary student who finds herself in a little bit of trouble. Along with Amy's Ukrainian grandmother, Beatrice, Loki and Amy travel to the realm of the elves (which may or may not contain a yellow brick road). Of course along the way they run into trouble, Odin, and Thor.

I found this novel to be brilliant. The wittiness of the author had me giggling from beginning to end. There is more than one scene in which Amy is trying to teach Loki about modern technology. During these scenes I thought for sure I was reading about my own experiences trying to teach my mom about Facebook (I love you mom!).

The only knock I have against this book deals with Amy. I found her character to be weak. Without Loki's dominating personality and Beatrice's supporting role (Think Cloris Leachman), Amy would have suffered. There were more than a few times when I found myself thinking "Is she just this dumb because she has big boobs?". I by no means think girls with big boobs are dumb. Believe me. I understand that stereotype better than I would like to. I say that because there were points where Amy would make a ditzy statement and the author would follow it up with a reminder of the size of Amy's chest. I would have like to seen a little more from Amy. She is a veterinary student for Pete's sake. She can't possibly be that stupid.
