The White Princess

The White Princess - Philippa Gregory I started out as a big fan of Philippa Gregory's work. I read The Queen's Fool and I was in love. Looking back part of my love affair with that particular book might have been because Gregory doesn't really focus on historical people, she focuses on events and how they might have effected other people of the times. Her latest novel, The White Princess was a painful read. It seems to me Ms. Gregory no longer cares about the facts or history. Her purpose is to sell books and she is willing to throw her weight behind every outlandish claim ever made. SPOILER- I do not believe Margaret Beaufort killed the princes in the Tower. I do not believe Richard of York escaped and lived abroad. The evidence supporting either of these claims is minimal, highly circumstantial, and for the most part unaccepted even by the most skeptical contemporaries of the time. I have lost a great deal of respect for Ms. Gregory as a writer. Fame seems to have gone to her head. In many interviews, it sounds as if she's doing her best to convince everyone her versions of historical events is the only version. Trying to claim the War of the Roses was and should be referred to as the Cousins' War? No. It's the War of the Roses. That's how history refers to it. Wanting to change the name just to sell novels? C'mon, you can do better than that. Let your writing speak for itself. In the past I thought it was good enough.
